A black couple living in the U.K. were shocked by the birth of a blond haired, blue-eyed girl.

Ben Ihegboro must have briefly questioned his wife Angela’s fidelity after the birth of Nmachi, and he conceded: “We both just sat there after the birth staring at her”.

As there is no known mixed-race background in either of the parents’ families, geneticists are baffled by the newborn’s surprise appearance.

Nmachi is the couple’s third child, with Dumebi, 2, and Chisom, 4, each bearing a strong resemblance to their parents. Doctors rejected the possibility of the baby being albino. The real cause is unknown, with the only explanation being a “genetic quirk.”

Professor Bryan Sykes, head of human genetics at Oxford University, described the birth as “extraordinary,” telling The Sun that for the baby to be completely white, both Ben and Angela would need to have “some form of white ancestry.’” The explanation for this lies in that mixed-race women carry some eggs containing genes for white skin and others for black; similarly men carry the same range of genes in their sperm.

Professor Sykes commented: “The hair is extremely unusual. Even many blond children don’t have blond hair like this at birth.”

Ben said that his son Chisom “keeps coming to look at his sister and then sits down looking puzzled.”

The heartbeats of a mother and her unborn fetus synchronize when she breathes rhythmically, researchers have said.

Scientists at the University of Aberdeen claim the connection paves the way for a new technique to detect development problems during pregnancy.

They said if this synchronization did not happen it could signal something might be wrong.

This, the researchers suggest, could allow early medical intervention.

Dr Marco Thiel, one of a team of physicists from the University of Aberdeen who worked on the study, said: “Pregnant mothers often report an awareness of a bond with their child. The fetus can sense the rhythmical shift in the mother’s heartbeat and adapts its own heartbeat accordingly”

“But until now there has been no hard evidence to suggest this bond is reflected in the interaction of their heartbeats.

“Our findings reveal that synchronization between the heartbeat of a mother and fetus does actually occur – but only when the mother is breathing in a rhythmical fashion.

“The fetus can sense the rhythmical shift in the mother’s heartbeat and adapts its own heartbeat accordingly.”

Dr Thiel added: “Importantly, the phenomenon does not occur when a mother is breathing normally.

“Although our studies showed that synchronization between the fetus and mother’s heartbeat might occur under normal conditions, this can be coincidental and not because of an actual physiological connection.”

California public health officials on Monday strongly urged elderly adults, children and pregnant women to get vaccinated against whooping cough, citing an epidemic in the state that is on track to be the worst in 50 years.

Nearly 1,500 cases of whooping cough have been reported statewide this year, nearly five times the number of cases last year, according to Dr. Gil Chavez, the state’s epidemiologist.

Babies under 6 months old are the most vulnerable because even those vaccinated have yet to develop immunity, Chavez said.

Five infants have died of whooping cough so far this year, all under 3 months old. Two of the deaths were in Los Angeles County. A sixth possible infant death was still being investigated Monday in L.A. County, Chavez said.

Last year three infants died of the disease, one each in Los Angeles, Kern and San Bernardino counties. All of the whooping cough deaths since 1996 have been infants under 3 months old, according to Ken August, a spokesman for the California Department of Public Health.

As of July 16, L.A. County had reported 289 possible whooping cough cases for the year, including 73 confirmed infections and 54 likely infections, according to the Department of Public Health. The county 156 reported cases of whooping cough last year.

The highly contagious upper-respiratory infection, also known as pertussis, initially may be mistaken for a cold, becoming more serious as it escalates and often causing those infected to make a tell-tale “whooping” sound as they gasp for air.

Pertussis infections typically peak every five years, Chavez said. The last outbreak in California was in 2005, when 3,182 cases were reported statewide and eight infants died. Since then, a booster vaccine was developed for adolescents and adults.

“It’s time for Californians to help us by getting vaccinated and protecting themselves,” Chavez said.

The Department of Public Health on Monday expanded its vaccination recommendation to include children age 7 and older; adults age 64 and older; women before, during and immediately after pregnancy; and anyone who may have contact with pregnant women or infants.

Dr. Jack Chou, a Baldwin Park family physician, said he was “heartened” by the new recommendations.

“That will allow us to give this vaccine to grandparents who care for infants,” said Chou, president of the California Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Dean Blumberg, an associate professor of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis, said three-quarters of infants who catch whooping cough get it from someone in their home.

“That’s why it’s important to make sure their siblings and caregivers are protected,” Blumberg said.

Public health officials have been tracking whooping cough cases by county, patient age and ethnicity, Chavez said. They have seen more infections in counties such as Marin, where more parents have opted out of vaccinating children, he said. Latino infants are most likely to get whooping cough, more than twice as likely as white infants. Among adults, whites are most likely to get infected, followed by Latinos, Chavez said.

Chavez said the department has provided free vaccines to local hospitals and community clinics and held a series of meetings with ethnic media outlets in Northern, Southern and Central California to raise awareness about the importance of vaccinations.

Department officials said the booster vaccine is safe for pregnant women, is made from a dead virus and is preservative-free.

I’m pregnant. Can the oil harm me or my unborn baby?

Although the oil may contain some chemicals that could cause harm to an unborn baby under some conditions, the CDC has reviewed sampling data from the EPA and feels that the levels of these chemicals are well below the level that could generally cause harm to pregnant women or their unborn babies. The effects that chemicals might have on a pregnant woman and her unborn baby would depend on many things: how the mother came into contact with the oil, how long she was in contact with it, how often she came into contact with it, and the overall health of the mother and her baby.

People, including pregnant women, can be exposed to these chemicals by breathing them (air), by swallowing them (water, food), or by touching them (skin). If possible, everyone, including pregnant women, should avoid the oil and spill-affected areas. Generally, a pregnant woman will see or smell the chemicals in oil before those chemicals can hurt her or the baby.

What can I do to protect myself and my unborn baby?

• If you live along the coast, avoid areas where there are reports of oil reaching the shore.
• If the smell bothers you or you see smoke, stay indoors, set your air conditioner to reuse indoor air, and avoid physical activities that put extra demand on your lungs and heart.
• If you find any oil, avoid touching it, as well as oil spill-affected water and sand.
• If some of the oil gets on your skin, wash it off as soon as you can with soap and water.
• If you begin to feel sick after coming into contact with the oil or spill-affected areas, contact your doctor or other health professional.
• Follow local and state public health guidelines and warnings related to the oil spill .

Can the air make me sick?

Although the oil vapors may contain some things that could be harmful to pregnant women, the CDC has reviewed sampling data from the EPA and feels that the levels of these chemicals are well below the level that could generally cause harm to pregnant women or their unborn babies.

Smell

Pregnant women may be affected by the strong smell. It can give you a headache or upset stomach, so you may want to stay indoors, set your air conditioner to reuse indoor air, and avoid physical activities that put extra demand on your lungs and heart. If your symptoms do not improve after moving indoors, contact your health care professional, especially if you have asthma or other lung problems.

If you have to be outside, a N95 respirator with an odor control feature may provide some relief from the smell. Based on what we know now, you do not need to use a N95 respirator for your safety, but using one may make you more comfortable. Most hardware stores stock respirators (you should check the label to make sure the mask is a NIOSH certified N95 respirator with odor control or a charcoal layer). Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to be sure you are using the mask properly.

Burning oil

Burning the oil in the Gulf of Mexico is one method being used to ensure that no oil make it to shore and/or to potentially harm people, animals or the environment. As responders burn some of the oil, some “Particulate Matter” (PM) may be created. PM is a mix of very small particles and liquid droplets found in the air. PM varies in size and the smallest PM can get deep into your lungs. PM should not reach the shore because the fires are far offshore. When crews burn the spilled oil they carefully watch the weather, wind, and water conditions and monitor the air. They stop the burn right away if there is any problem.

If you smell or see smoke you can take the following steps to protect yourself:

• Leave the area if you are at greater risk from breathing smoke. If you have a chronic respiratory condition such as asthma or cardiovascular disease, you may be at greater risk. Talk to your doctor about ways to avoid this risk.
• Limit your exposure to smoke: stay inside and use your air conditioner set to a recirculation mode. If you do not have an air conditioner you may wish to leave the area until the smoke is completely gone.
• Avoid activities that put extra demands on your lungs and heart. These include exercising or physical chores, both outdoors and indoors.
• Dust masks, bandanas, or other cloths (even if wet) will not protect you from smoke.

Is the water safe?

Drinking water is not expected to be affected by the spill. If you have any concerns about your water, contact your water utility company.

Swimming in water affected by the oil spill will be unpleasant and could cause harm. For now, pregnant women should avoid zones where there are reports of oil reaching the shore. It is important to stay away from any oil that reaches the shore because coming into close contact with the oil for long periods of time could cause harm. Avoid touching any of the oil you find, as well as oil-stained water and sand. If some of the oil gets on your skin, wash it off as soon as you can with soap and water. If you notice rashes or dark sticky spots on your skin even after you’ve washed the area of skin that came in contact with the oil, consult your doctor or other health care professional.

CDC recommends that people follow local and state public health guidelines and warnings related to the use of beaches and coastal water for recreational activities and fishing.

Is it safe for me to eat fish or seafood from the Gulf of Mexico?

As a precaution, fishing areas affected by the spill are closed to fishing and oyster collection, for both personal and commercial use. Any seafood available in stores comes from non-closed waters. Seafood that is unsafe will not be allowed in stores.

What are oil dispersants and are they harmful to me?

Oil spill dispersants are applied to break an oil slick into small droplets and prevent the oil from coming back together. It is unlikely that coastal residents will come into contact with undiluted dispersants, which are used out in the Gulf. It is possible that diluted dispersants could reach the coast in the air or the water. EPA is monitoring the air and water along the shore for dispersants and has not detected any at levels that could be a threat to you or your child.

Some of the chemicals in the dispersants can cause harm to people under some conditions, which is why the use of dispersants is carefully controlled and monitored. Pregnant women should avoid contact with dispersants or any other potentially harmful chemical, if possible. For most people, brief contact with a small amount of oil spill dispersants will do no harm. However, longer contact can cause a rash, dry skin, and eye irritation. In the unlikely event of breathing them in or swallowing them, other health effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and throat and lung irritation are possible. If you are concerned that you have been exposed to oil spill dispersants, contact your doctor or other health care professional.

A Utah woman is pregnant with two babies, due at two different times.

Angie Cromar says her first ultrasound surprised both her and her doctor.

She discovered she was pregnant with two babies at two slightly different stages of development — about four days apart.

“[He said] I’m five weeks and four days in one, and six weeks and one day in the other.”

She knew she was born with the rare condition called didelphys, meaning two uteruses. It was never an issue in her other pregnancies, but this time she conceived in both.

The chances of this happening are one in 5 million.

Her doctor says less than 100 double pregnancies like this have been reported worldwide.

Cromar, a labor and delivery nurse, knows the rarity can bring about complications like pre-term labor and low birth weight.

She says she’s a little nervous but also very excited.

Cromar is now 20 weeks along.

A new study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology says that feeding infants formula in their first days of life prevents babies from developing an allergy to cow’s milk.

In the study, the longest and largest prospective study of its kind, the researchers looked at the feeding history of 13,019 infants. Children who were started on infant formula containing cow’s milk protein in the first through the 15th days of life were almost completely protected from developing Cows Milk Protein Allergy (CMA) — 19 times more protected than babies fed cow’s milk protein after 15 days. CMA can be dangerous to babies, leading to rashes, respiratory problems, shock and even death, so this boost to the immune system early in life acts as a “vaccination.”

What’s interesting about this study (besides the obvious) is they recommend that babies get one bottle of formula every day for the first 15 days of life. Something we’ve been told to avoid at all costs.

Introducing formula later than 15 days has no value and can even trigger a cow’s milk allergy if given during the three- to five-month period after birth. Which is the previous recommendation for introducing a bottle, if not introducing formula.

The study doesn’t advocate for formula or decry breastfeeding, explaining that you can nurse all day long, just slip in some formula at some point.

Of course, as the doctor points out, giving the baby a bottle is an excellent way for dad to step in and bond with the baby too.

July has been designated Cord Blood Awareness Month by the National Health Information Center and a society of the American Hospital Association, with the goal of educating others about the medical value of cord blood stem cells. To recognize the occasion, throughout the month The Stem Cell Source will be highlighting useful information and resources for parents who want to learn more about cord blood banking.

While awareness of the medical value of cord blood stem cells is on the rise, the need for more education remains. According to a 2006 study published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine, three out of four expectant mothers who have heard of cord blood banking consider themselves minimally informed.

The need for greater education was the driving force behind the creation of the Cord Blood Education Center, an online program that informs expectant parents about their options for cord blood. Developed by Cord Blood Registry with input from healthcare providers, stem cell researchers and experts in public banking, the program describes all of the options available to expectant parents and is designed to give them access to information early enough in pregnancy so that they can make an informed choice about the storage, donation or disposal of their newborn’s cord blood stem cells.

To take an accurate reading, first place the cuff over your left wrist with your left thumb facing upwards.

Next, position the unit, leaving approximately 0.5-inches of space between the edge of the cuff and your palm.

When your wrist reaches the proper position in line with your heart, the monitor beeps and automatically starts.

Instructions for Wrist Blood Pressure Monitors
There are several easy steps to taking your blood pressure with this monitor. First of all, avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement. Stress raises blood pressure, so avoid taking measurements during stressful times. Also, measurements should be taken in a quiet place. You should be in a relaxed, seated position with your feet flat on the floor. Before you take your measurement, rest comfortably in a relaxed environment for at least 15 minutes. Place the cuff over your left wrist with your left thumb facing upwards. Position the unit leaving approximately 0.5-inches of space between the edge of the cuff and your palm. Pull the cuff upward while holding the edge of the wrist cuff and wrap snugly. Make sure to lightly press the Velcro closure with your fingers so that it is fastened tightly.

Using your elbow as an axis point, slowly raise your left hand at an angle towards your right shoulder. Stop your movement when the heart mark is aligned with the arrow symbol. When your wrist reaches the proper position, the monitor beeps and automatically starts inflation and measurement. Hold your wrist at this position. Do not make any movements until the measurement results are displayed. Once the measurement is complete, the cuff will deflate and your blood pressure and pulse rate will display on the screen. If you need to stop the measurement at any time, simply press the on/off button and the monitor will immediately deflate. And remember, always consult your physician for specific information about your blood pressure.

What is IntelliSense?
The IntelliSense monitor inflates the cuff to the ideal level with each use — you never have to make any adjustments to select an inflation level. This is especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders because their blood pressure is so likely to fluctuate. The biggest advantage of using the IntelliSense technology is a personalized inflation, every time, for maximum comfort.

The Importance of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring
Doctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons. Home monitoring provides your healthcare professionals with better information to understand and manage your high blood pressure. Many types of hypertension can only be detected by monitoring your blood pressure at home, including:

• White-Coat Hypertension: blood pressure reading is high in your doctor’s office but lower at home
• Masked Hypertension: blood pressure reading is low in doctor’s office but higher at home

Pregnant women subjected to passive smoking give birth to babies with an increased, lifelong susceptibility to cancer, research reveals.

Passive smoking causes the same type of genetic damage in unborn infants as that found in adult smokers with cancerous tumors.

Researchers said the abnormalities in newborns were indistinguishable from those found in babies of mothers who were active smokers.

And they may affect survival, birth weight and lifelong susceptibility to diseases like cancer, according to the study published online in the Open Paediatric Medicine Journal.

Dr Stephen Grant and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh in the U.S. found a smoke-induced mutation in an oncogene, a gene which transforms normal cells into cancerous tumors.

The mutation was the same level and type in newborns of mothers who were active smokers as those in babies born to non-smoking mothers exposed to tobacco smoke.

The mutations were also discernible in newborns of women who had stopped smoking during their pregnancies, but who did not actively avoid second-hand smoke.

The study confirms previous research in which Dr Grant discovered evidence of genetic abnormalities in babies whose mothers were exposed to environmental tobacco smoke.

There is also evidence that maternal exposure to passive smoke, as well as a history of paternal cigarette smoke exposure, is linked with an increased risk of childhood cancer, especially leukaemias and lymphomas in children under five.

Dr Grant said: ‘These findings back up our previous conclusion that passive, or secondary, smoke causes permanent genetic damage in newborns that is very similar to the damage caused by active smoking.

‘By using a different laboratory test, we were able to pick up a completely distinct yet equally important type of genetic mutation that is likely to persist throughout a child’s lifetime.

‘Pregnant women should not only stop smoking, but be aware of their exposure to tobacco smoke from other family members, work and social situations.’

Women who drink during pregnancy may be damaging the future fertility of their sons, research suggests.

In a study of almost 350 young men, sperm levels were a third lower in those whose mothers had drunk more than four drinks a week during pregnancy compared with teetotallers.

The Danish researchers told a fertility conference these men may have a harder time getting their partner pregnant.

UK experts said alcohol may not be the issue, but a marker for other factors.

Current advice is to avoid alcohol during pregnancy, but those who do so are advised to have no more than one or two units of alcohol once or twice a week.

The study included men, now aged between 18 and 21, whose mothers had taken part in a large study on lifestyle while they were pregnant with them.

Researchers told the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology conference that they split the men into four groups – those whose mothers drank nothing, those who had one to one and a half drinks a week, two to four drinks a week, or more than four drinks a week.

One drink was classed as a beer, small glass of wine or one measure of spirits.

Four drinks in the study is equivalent to around six UK units.

When they looked at sperm counts in the men’s semen samples, they found those with the highest alcohol exposure in the womb had average concentrations of 25 million per millilitre compared with 40 million/ml in those whose mothers drank no alcohol.

After adjusting for factors which might influence sperm, such as smoking and medical history, they calculated that average sperm concentration was 32% lower in the highest alcohol group than the abstinence group.

The World Health Organization says that a normal range of sperm is 20 to 40 million/ml.

Children who get a combination of measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox vaccines in one shot are at a slightly increased risk of getting a fever-related seizure, compared with children getting two separate shots – one containing measles, mumps and rubella and the another containing the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics.

“The risk of a febrile seizure after any measles-containing vaccine is low – about one febrile seizure in 1,000 doses” says lead study author, Dr. Nicola Klein, co-director of Kaiser Permanente’s Vaccine Study Center. “But if a child gets the combination vaccine, the risk doubles,” says Klein.

Researchers looked at vaccine-safety data from more than 459,000 toddlers between the ages of 12 and 23 months and found there was one additional case of febrile seizure for every 2,300 doses of MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella) vaccine given. The seizures occurred seven to 10 days after the injection.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a febrile seizure is a fever-related seizure, which can occur when a child has a fever at or above 102°F or when a high fever is going down.

“Febrile seizures are benign,” Klein says, meaning they’re generally not dangerous. “They are very frightening to parents, but do not lead to long-term seizures or epilepsy.” The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees: “While febrile seizures may be very scary, they are harmless to the child. Febrile seizures do not cause brain damage, nervous system problems, paralysis, mental retardation, or death.”

Febrile seizures can occur in children ages 6 months to 5 years, but are most common in toddlers ages 12 months to 18 months, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Klein says up to 5 percent of children will have a febrile seizure between 6 months and 5 years, but that they are more likely to be caused by a common cold or other infections.

This combination vaccine was first approved in 2005. “The benefit of the MMRV is ease of administration,” says Dr. William Schaffner, chairman, Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University and a liaison to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the CDC’s vaccine advisory board.

It was that ease – a single shot for four vaccines, which led the ACIP to recommend a preference for this new vaccine back in 2006, says Schaffner.

Klein presented early research to the ACIP in 2008 suggesting an increased risk of seizures. This led to the CDC to change its recommendation last year from preferring the combination vaccine to having no preference. This means MMRV or the MMR plus chickenpox vaccine may be given for the first dose for children 12-23 months.

This new study confirms Klein’s earlier research. This “final result is exactly what we expected,” says Schaffner. “This study provides a basis for every pediatrician.”

“The ACIP has quite clearly said both [MMRV and MMR plus chickenpox separately] are good – both provide protection.” But Schaffner says if there is any doubt for the parents or pediatrician, “two [vaccinations] is the way to go.”

Klein says the benefit of the MMRV is “one less injection for children.” Her study concludes that pediatricians who choose to use this combination vaccine need to be aware of the risks, albeit small, and clearly communicate them to parents. If parents choose to go with separate vaccinations, their child will get the MMR vaccine in one arm and the chickenpox vaccine in the other arm.

Although the MMRV has been available for five years now, usage of this combination vaccine dropped significantly after the manufacturer, Merck, announced it would be unavailable after July 2007 because of a shortage of the chickenpox vaccine.

According to the CDC, Merck was taking orders for the MMRV vaccine starting on May 10 of this year and according to the manufacturer, the vaccine is now available again.

The updated package insert for the MMRV vaccine say it “is associated with higher rates of fever and febrile seizures at 5 to 12 days after vaccination,” compared with children who got the MMR and chickenpox shots separately.

Pregnant Muslim women who fast during Ramadan are likely to have smaller babies who are more prone to learning disabilities, a new study has found.

Researchers from the U.S. said this trend was most marked if mothers-to-be fasted early on in their pregnancy and during the summer when longer days meant they went more hours without food.

They also found that the women were 10 per cent less likely to give birth to a boy if they had fasted.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and a time when Muslims across the world fast from dawn until sunset.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and many women may fear a loss of connection with their communities if they did not observe it.

Women who request an exemption from fasting are expected to make up the days they have missed after their baby is born.

The study was based on census data from the US, Iraq and Uganda. It also revealed that the long-term effects on the adult’s health impacted on their future economic success.

Study author Douglas Almond, of Columbia University said: ‘We generally find the largest effects on adults when Ramadan falls early in pregnancy.

‘Rates of adult disability are roughly 20 per cent higher, with specific mental disabilities showing substantially larger effects.’

Women pregnant with twins should be sure to gain the recommended amount of weight, according to a new study, which shows that gaining less weight than recommended during a twin pregnancy ups the risk of early birth and low weight babies.

“A woman should gain about a pound a week; less than that, and we had smaller babies and more pre-term births,” Dr. Nathan Fox of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Associates of New York City told Reuters Health.

Fox and his partners wanted to know if the twin pregnancy weight gain guidelines updated by the Institute of Medicine in 2009 made a difference in pregnancy outcomes.

These recommendations suggest a range of weight gain depending on a woman’s weight at the start of her twin pregnancy. A normal weight woman should gain 37 to 54 pounds; an overweight woman, 31 to 50 pounds; and an obese woman, 25 to 42 pounds.

In looking at 281 mostly normal weight women pregnant with twins, Fox and colleagues found that women who gained the recommended amount of weight did much better in regards to the pregnancy outcomes.

Women who gained less than the recommended amount of weight were more likely to give birth early (before 32 weeks of pregnancy) than women who gained the correct amount of weight (14 percent versus 5 percent). They were also more likely to give birth to smaller babies.

Unlike in singleton pregnancies, gaining enough weight in twin pregnancies can be Herculean task. “It’s often not easy,” Fox said. “We send our patients to nutritionists and have them on high calorie diets a lot to have them gain the right amount of weight. It’s not easy for many (women).”

About 3 in every 100 pregnancies is a twin pregnancy, the investigators note, and preterm births occur about 60 percent of the time, making the issue of correct weight gain even more important.

The strong link between inadequate weight gain in twin pregnancies and increased rates of pre-term birth “has not been conclusively demonstrated previously,” the investigators point out in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Their findings, they say, shed light on the importance on what “could be a correctable cause of prematurity in twins,” they conclude.

Fathers who take paternity leave live longer, experts say.

According to their study, taking up to two months off work when a baby is born lowers a man’s risk of dying prematurely by almost 25 per cent.

Their research is based on the health and habits of men in Sweden, the first country to give new fathers paid time off work.

And the experts say encouraging men to take time off when their child is born may help to close the gender gap in longevity. At the moment, men live on average five to seven years fewer than women.

The reasons behind that are not clear, but one theory is that men who are close to their children take better care of their own health. This might mean that they eat healthier foods, drink less, visit the doctor more often or simply take fewer risks in life.

Another theory is that making time for family activities cuts stress levels, according to the journal Social Science & Medicine.

‘Strategies aimed at less gender stereotypical expectations on what a man “should do” are on the whole likely to benefit male health, and potentially reduce the gender gap in longevity, said the researchers, from Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute, who studied 72,000 fathers.

Living close to a mobile phone mast does not increase the chance of a pregnant woman’s baby developing cancer before he or she reaches the age of five, a study has found.

Researchers from Imperial College London looked at almost 7,000 children and found those who developed cancer aged four or younger were no more likely to have a birth address close to a mast than their peers.

The study included 1,397 British children aged up to four who were registered with leukemia or a tumor in the brain or central nervous system between 1999 and 2001.

The proximity of their birth address to a mast was compared to that of four healthy children of the same gender who were born on the same day, chosen randomly to act as controls.

Professor Paul Elliott, director of the MRC-HPA Centre for Environment and Health at Imperial College London and the study’s lead author, said: “People are worried that living near a mobile phone mast might affect their children’s health.

“We looked at this question with respect to risk of cancers in young children. We found no pattern to suggest that the children of mums living near a base station during pregnancy had a greater risk of developing cancer than those who lived elsewhere.”

Children of mothers whose blood glucose (sugar) was high during pregnancy are more likely to have low insulin sensitivity-a risk factor for type 2 diabetes-even after taking into consideration the children’s body weight, a new study shows. The results will be presented Tuesday at The Endocrine Society’s 92nd Annual Meeting in San Diego.

“We know that children born to women with type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes, or who have high blood sugar during pregnancy are at risk of becoming diabetic themselves. This study suggests that the children’s increased risk appears to be due, at least in part, to their prenatal exposure to relatively high maternal blood glucose,” said study co-author Paula Chandler-Laney, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Chandler-Laney and her colleagues studied 21 children ages 5 to 10 years and measured the children’s sensitivity to insulin, the hormone that regulates sugar in the blood. They also evaluated the pregnancy medical records of the children’s mothers to determine maternal blood sugar concentration during the oral glucose tolerance test.

The researchers found an inverse association between maternal blood sugar during pregnancy and the child’s insulin sensitivity, meaning that the higher the mother’s blood sugar levels during pregnancy, the lower her child’s insulin sensitivity. Low insulin sensitivity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

Obesity lowers insulin sensitivity, but the children’s reduced insulin sensitivity was independent of their amount of body fat, the authors reported.

In addition, children exposed to high blood sugar levels in the womb also were more likely to have exaggerated insulin secretion after a meal, independent of their reduced insulin sensitivity. Relatively high insulin secretion is also associated with increased risk for later development of type 2 diabetes, Chandler-Laney explained.

None of the children had high blood sugar, but puberty would further lower their insulin sensitivity, she noted.

“High maternal blood glucose during pregnancy may have lasting effects on children’s insulin sensitivity and secretion, potentially raising the risk for type 2 diabetes,” Chandler-Laney said. “Obstetricians, pediatricians, and pregnant women should all be aware of the potential far-reaching consequences that elevated blood sugar during pregnancy can have on children’s health.”
